Teltonika comparison

FMC650 vs FMC150 vs FMC130: which Teltonika tracker to choose

These three 4G trackers are often on the same shortlist, yet they are built for different jobs. This page compares them side by side, using only the official Teltonika datasheets, and ends with a few plain questions that point you to the right one.

Last updated:

The short answer

All three are 4G LTE Cat 1 trackers with a 2G (GSM) fallback, Bluetooth LE and a backup battery. What separates them is how they get vehicle data and how much they can connect.

FMC650 is the professional truck terminal: two CAN J1939 interfaces, J1708, K-line and tachograph functions. FMC150 is a compact tracker with a CAN data processor built in, so it reads fuel, mileage and other CAN values without a separate adapter. FMC130 is a compact tracker with flexible inputs, including an impulse input for a fuel flow meter, and it reads CAN through an external adapter.

When FMC650 is the right choice

Pick FMC650 when the vehicle is a truck or tractor unit and the tachograph matters. According to the datasheet it supports DDD file download and online tacho data, and it reads vehicle data over CAN J1939, J1708 and K-line. It also has the most connections of the three: four digital and four analog inputs, two RS232 ports and an RS485 port for fuel level sensors, RFID readers or other serial devices.

It also has the larger 550 mAh battery and external GNSS and cellular antennas. The price of all this is size: it is a 199 g terminal, not a small box you tuck behind a panel.

When FMC150 is the right choice

FMC150 is the simplest way to get fuel level, total fuel consumption, distance driven, engine speed and pedal position from a car, van, bus or truck. The datasheet describes it as a 2-in-1 device, a GPS tracker with a CAN adapter inside, and notes that its CAN module can also read data from electric vehicles. Because the processor is integrated, you do not buy and mount a separate CAN adapter.

It is also the smallest and lightest of the three at 55 g. It does not offer tachograph functions or serial ports, so it is not a replacement for FMC650 in a heavy truck.

When FMC130 is the right choice

FMC130 is the flexible one. It has two impulse inputs, which allows a fuel flow meter to be read, one negative input and Bluetooth LE for external beacons and sensors. That combination suits trailers, rental and leasing fleets, machinery and vehicles where you want to add sensors of your own.

For CAN data it uses an external adapter: the datasheet lists LV-CAN200, ALL-CAN300 and CAN-CONTROL for fuel monitoring. If you already own such an adapter, or you prefer to choose it per vehicle, FMC130 fits well. If you want CAN data out of the box, look at FMC150.

Five questions that decide it

Answer these in order and stop at the first yes.

  • Does the vehicle have a tachograph whose data you need remotely? Choose FMC650.
  • Do you need RS232 or RS485 for fuel sensors or other serial devices? Choose FMC650.
  • Is it a car, van or light truck where you want fuel and mileage from CAN with no extra adapter? Choose FMC150.
  • Do you need to read a fuel flow meter through an impulse input, or attach several sensors to a trailer or machine? Choose FMC130.
  • Is the smallest possible box the priority and CAN data is optional? FMC150 and FMC130 are the same size; pick by the two points above.

What about FMM650, FMC640 and FMB640

They belong to the same truck family as FMC650. FMM650, FMC640 and FMB640 also read CAN and tachograph data, and they differ mainly in network generation and connectivity options. If you are leaning towards a truck model, compare them on the truck trackers page before deciding.

Installation and configuration

All three are hard-wired devices, and all three are rated IP41, so plan for a dry mounting place inside the vehicle. FMC650 needs more wiring because of its extra interfaces and CAN lines; FMC150 and FMC130 are quick to fit in a car or van.

Configuration is done with Teltonika Configurator, and per the datasheets all three support FOTA WEB for remote configuration and firmware updates. FMC150 and FMC130 can also be configured over Bluetooth. After setup, the device is pointed to the server that will receive its data.

How Tafi helps

Tafi Solutions is a Teltonika partner and resells Teltonika trackers in Moldova and Romania. Tell us your vehicle types and what you want to see: we recommend a model per vehicle, and we connect the devices to Tafi GPS or TAFI Agent so that mileage, fuel and driver data are read correctly from day one. Our own AVL decoder has dictionaries for all three models.

Frequently asked questions

Is FMC650 better than FMC150?

Neither is better in general. FMC650 is built for trucks that need tachograph functions, J1939 CAN and serial ports. FMC150 is a compact tracker with integrated CAN reading for cars, vans and light trucks.

Can FMC130 read CAN data?

Yes, through an external CAN adapter. The datasheet lists LV-CAN200, ALL-CAN300 and CAN-CONTROL for fuel monitoring. FMC150 has the CAN processor built in.

Which of the three can download tachograph files?

FMC650. Its datasheet lists DDD download and tacho online data. The FMC150 and FMC130 datasheets list no tachograph functions.

Do all three work with Tafi GPS?

Yes. All three can be connected to Tafi GPS, and Tafi's decoder has dictionaries for each of them.
